1. Drill down through the taxonomy of your process:
- Level 1 (Business Areas): the highest aggregation of the organization’s functionality (functional activity clusters where processes are logically interrelated) that embraces core functionalities of your business, such as sales, support, production, etc;
- Level 2 (Process Groups): a bunch of processes that belong to the same sphere of responsibility by dealing with similar tasks and operations for some business or functional reasons;
- Level 3 (Business Processes): the level to aggregate business-oriented functions into sustainable units of meaningfully arranged and incorporated steps or activities which can execute a business task;
- Level 4 (Business Process Variants): alternative ways to reach the same output that is applicable to different conditions, but can be obtained in a different manner;
- Level 5 (Process Steps): bunches of correlated process activities that are associated with certain methodical step of process development;
- Level 6 (Activities): activities are the lowest possible granular elements that are no more further hierarchized – they reflect the single actions of a process executer;
2. Hierarchize the internal process matters:
- Define the seniority of the process workforce – figure out how the employees are organized and interrelated in terms of work reporting and responsibility (build a hierarchy of subordination);
- Determine the hierarchy of process actions – decompose the process into separate steps and sub-operations that are vividly interconnected and hierarchically arranged on a breakdown structure;
- Determine the hierarchy of organizational incorporation – make sure the inputs from correlated business processes are defined, and their touchpoints are also identified (this can help to find out......);
